Kitty Black is an emerging children’s author from Perth with a background in psychology and research. In 2015, she began blogging and freelance writing while looking after her small children. Kitty’s most recent picture book is The Starting School List (Affirm Press, 2023). She is also the author of: Who’s Afraid of the Quite Nice Wolf? (New Frontier, 2019), A Crocodile in the Family (Hachette, 2020), Mr Bat Wants a Hat (New Frontier, 2021), Max and Worry (Affirm 2021) and Lucy and Sad (Affirm, 2021).
Kitty is also the author of the middle grade trilogy, Everglade – a brilliant series with echoes of Buffy and Marvel, combining magic, black comedy, neuro-divergence and beautiful tween-age friendships. The first book in the series, Rise of the Witch, was published by Affirm in 2025.
In 2018, she completed a Fellowship with Paper Bird Books, funded by Fremantle Libraries and was presented as Creative Kids Tales ‘Featured Emerging Author of the Month’ in November 2018.
In addition to writing picture books, Kitty has also published numerous articles and blog posts about parenting for Mother.ly, Pinky McKay’s website, Kidspot, Scary Mommy, Her View From Home, Parent.Co, The Mother Magazine and Mamapedia.
